MCST 601: Discussion 1.1: Medical Cannabis Concept Map

Discussion 1.1: Medical Cannabis Concept Map

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Demonstrate a commitment to excellence through continuing professional development and the education and training of patients, healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and other relevant stakeholders.

Context

Create a diagram or concept map that illustrates your understanding of the different jobs and professional roles in the medical cannabis industry. Where are you on this map?

Description and Rationale

In this assignment I illustrated the roles in the cannabis industry that I was familiar with and placed where I saw myself in the industry.

Assignment 4.1: Medical Student Educational Presentation

MCST 601

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Demonstrate a commitment to excellence through continuing professional development and the education and training of patients, healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and other relevant stakeholders.

Context

Imagine that you have been asked to speak to a group of medical students about medical cannabis laws and regulations. Pick a state and create a brief educational presentation for these students comparing that state to the federal cannabis laws. Describe ways in which the state and federal cannabis laws conflict.

Description and Rationale

I chose my home state of Georgia. Although Georgia has a medical cannabis program, it lacks the ability to service the patients who hold medical cannabis cards. Patients are allowed to have low THC oil, but at the time the presentation was created in 2020, the state didn’t have dispensaries to purchase it. Patients were having to purchase what they could from the illegal street market. Fast forward to May 2022 and nothing has changed.

MCST 601: Assignment 5.1: State-by-State Comparison

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Apply knowledge of historical and current laws, regulations, and policies to identify, analyze, and advocate for emerging issues related to medical cannabis and health.

Context

Describe two aspects of a state’s laws/policies related to medical cannabis (e.g., patient requirements, physician requirements, product availability, product analysis, etc). This can be your home state or another state of your choosing.  Compare these to two other states

Description and Rationale

I selected to compare my home state of Georgia to Hawaii and Arkansas. I selected Hawaii as one of the states because in 2019 I visited Hawaii (Oahu) and was not allowed to purchase from their dispensaries because there isn’t reciprocity between Georgia and Hawaii since Georgia doesn’t have a comprehensive program. I was saddened by the fact that I had to risk bringing my own oil with me to have my medication during the trip.  This is an issue that many patients face when traveling.

MCST 602 Assignment 2.1: First Pass Metabolism

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Apply concepts of pharmacology, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics to determine appropriate cannabis dosing, dosage forms and routes of administration for optimal treatment.

Context

Define first pass metabolism and describe the difference for a drug that undergoes first pass metabolism after oral vs. IV dosing.

Description and Rationale

I selected this assignment to include because this one provided an explanation of how drugs are metabolized in the body. This was specifically important to me to understand this concept to explain to patients how medications that they consume orally take time to take effect compared to IV medications which reach the blood stream more quickly.  Patients are told by medical professionals that it may take a certain period of time, but they are not told why. This also comes in to play when consuming edibles. Patients need to understand that due to first pass metabolism they must wait before eating more to allow the first dosage consumed to take effect.

MCST 603 Assignment 8.1: Vaping Compare and Contrast Essay

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Develop monitoring plans to determine effectiveness of medical cannabis therapy and to detect adverse effects of medical cannabis use

Context

Write essay where you compare and contrast the various stances (pros and cons) for the use of vaporizing devices for delivery of cannabinoids. Particularly focused on toxicity mechanisms and how improved formulations for vaping may be useful to overcome these issues,

Description and Rationale

I selected this assignment to include because vaping became a nationally discussed topic due to the popularity of E-Cigs which are still being used today. In this essay I discussed the number of cases in several states where vaping was related to severe pulmonary disease (EVALI).

MCST 604 Assignment 6.1: Pediatric Patient Case

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and traditional management strategies of pain and other physical symptoms to identify appropriate candidates for medical cannabis therapy.

Context

Complete a patient case. Go through several steps of the evidence-based medicine process to answer a patient's question about cannabinoids for insomnia.

Description and Rationale

In this piece I reviewed evidence-based studies (systematic reviews) that assisted me in answering the parents’ questions about medical cannabis use for the reduction of seizures caused by epilepsy and any adverse effects.

Assignment 7.1: The Importance of Culturally Competent Care

MCST 604

Terminal Performance Objective (TPOs)

Identify areas for future research related to science, health effects, and policy of medical cannabis, and describe the challenges associated with such research.

Demonstrate a commitment to excellence through continuing professional development and the education and training of patients, healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and other relevant stakeholders.

Context

This assignment called for me to watch a video and answer questions based upon what I observed.

Description and Rationale

As a person of color, I have recognized biases and disparities in patient care. It is a thought in the healthcare industry that black people either don’t experience or have a higher threshold for pain which is extremely untrue.  It is important for me to bring this information to the forefront as I continue to work toward bridging the gaps in healthcare for people of color.

MCST 604 Assignment 8.1: Self-Reflection

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Demonstrate a commitment to excellence through continuing professional development and the education and training of patients, healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies, and other relevant stakeholders.

Context

  • Recall the opinion paper you submitted in Module 1 (Assignment 1.1). Has your opinion changed? Why or why not?
  • How does your personal or professional background influence your thoughts on what you have learned in this course?
  • How might this knowledge contribute to your practice (e.g., how will you use what you have learned in the real world?)
  • What questions were generated by the resources provided during this course? How will you find the answers to these questions?

Description and Rationale

This essay was to determine if my opinion had changed from week 1 of this course regarding opinion piece, Informed Consent: A Policy Prescription for Communicating Benefit and Risk in State Medical Marijuana Programs.  In this piece the authors recommend that states that declare marijuana to be a medicine should inform the public about the quality of medical evidence behind each approved use and publicize all scientifically credible risks.

MCST 606 Anxiety Case Part 2 – Apply and Educate

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and traditional management strategies of pain and other physical symptoms to identify appropriate candidates for medical cannabis therapy.

Context

This assignment asked me to determine based on research if medical cannabis is a viable alternative to traditional medication in the treatment of anxiety and educate the patient on the results.

Description and Rationale

In this assignment I researched scholarly articles for cannabis and anxiety. I used the research to determine if cannabis would be an effective alternative for this patient’s conditions as opposed to her current regiment and educated the patient on the results.

Assignment 4.1 PTSD Case Part 2 – Appraise and Apply

MCST 606

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical assessment, and traditional management strategies of pain and other physical symptoms to identify appropriate candidates for medical cannabis therapy.

Context

This assignment called for the examination of the internal validity of an interventional trial.

Description and Rationale

In this assignment I read the trial Preliminary, Open-Label, Pilot Study of Add-On Oral D9 -Tetrahydrocannabinol in Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and determined the internal validity.

MCST 609 Assignment 5.1: USP Reference Standards Essay

Terminal Performance Objective (TPO)

Participate in health policy decision-making processes by evaluating primary literature to assist policy makers and prescribers in making well-informed decisions about medical cannabis therapy.
